If I charge 20 dollars, and I give an affiliate 5 dollars for each product sold is this good?

If you are promoting an ebook or a software , I think the commission rate should be more than 60% , it will attract the affiliate . And no one will promote any product which give them only 5$/sale
CJ.com charges a lot if you want them to manage your affiliate program — that’s why most of their clients are the big boys (ebay, Yahoo, Verizon, etc).
$5 is 25% commission. It really depends on the product and potential for earnings for the affiliates. Amazon Associates program gives commissions ranging from 5-8% of the sale. While I know of several affiliate programs that give 50% of the sale to the affiliate.
Check out Clickbank.com — they cater more to small and home-based online businesses who want to look for affiliates who can help them increase their sales and sell their products.
Of course, you have to factor the fees you will pay your affiliate management company, whether it is CJ.com, LInkshare or Clickbank
Check out commissionjunction.com. It’s the best place to get affiliates and to be an affiliate.

and advertise your website their.
Last night they sent out my ad and to be perfectly honest,i didnt expect anyone to sign up for my program…imagine my shock and joy when i checked my stats this morning and discovered that not only did i get 1722 sign-ups from the ad they sent BUT the majority of the 1722 sign-ups had already recruited people under them. the signups are still rolling in.
Most affiliates are willing to promote products that will pay them at least $20.00. This helps the affiliate cover the cost of advertising or the cost to get traffic to their site.
Commission Junction and Clickbank are probably the best places to start. You will find that most clickbank publishers are paying the affiliate 50% -75%.
You probably can raise the price of your product to help pay the affiliate and don’t be afraid to pay yourself a little less. The impact of having hundreds or thousands of affiliates promoting your product will be well worth it.
